Ready, set, mix: Establishing a online presence

In order to build a brand of something you truly enjoy, in this instance, it’s DJing for me, you have to create an online presence. An online presence in our digital era of technology is a necessity because people are starting to find only new things online. There are multiple ways of establishing an online presence that can help show content to new people, but it takes time. I plan on creating my online presence by creating a portfolio of what I mix for people on TikTok and Instagram, since millions of people are on those social platforms daily.

Choosing two platforms and focusing on how I can push content to new people while showing current people my capabilities has been a challenge that I have had to brainstorm for. Posting new content to an established audience is high-risk, high-reward on Instagram because if they think the new content is good, you already have support, but if they don’t, they will just potentially unfollow due to misalignment with what they originally followed you for. Instagram Reels are a great way to showcase to a new audience my DJing while showing my current followers my hobby. I plan to post twice a week on Instagram of new mixes I create to slowly build up videos that people can see on my Instagram of what I can do.

TikTok is a great way to get new people to be aware of your content since you can have so many different variations of marketing yourself. I plan to market myself on TikTok by posting daily mixes of any music, and I will be utilizing hashtags and mentioning people in the description. Mentioning the main creator of the song automatically sends my video to people who are aware of that creator’s song, which helps build a brand. Popular hashtags help with pushing videos to new people, so whenever I post, I make sure to use hashtags with the most views.

Doing this won’t be easy because it takes time to establish a brand that you want others to view you as. I always enjoy the journey while working towards reaching the destination, since that’s how I’ve always been wired as a person. Premaking several videos in one day is extremely helpful for posting, so I can work on other things in my life, which is key for this whole thing to balance what I have to do with what I enjoy. If you have an idea for a mix, I am always open to the challenge to make it sound good, so feel free to drop any songs in the comments or message me.

Fueling creativity: Turning inspiration to action

When people think of a DJ, they think of people that control the music in either a club, bar, or event. What sets them apart from music producers is that they combine things on the fly when performing at whatever venue they are DJing at. Now it may be hard to be mixing new music on the fly while DJing since you have to have a little background in music to mix well, but it takes time for practicing those new mixes beforehand. Normally they will practice at their house to experiment what they want to see live.

I practice songs that I believe that might sound good together which can be an instrumental of one song with only a vocal of another. If they don’t sound that good together, I just try another that I think that sounds well based off the key thats it’s in. A helpful tool that myself and other DJ’s use is called a camelot wheel which tells what songs you can mix without any changes. For example, Pink pony club by Chappel Roan is a 1A song and Problem by Ariana Grande is also a 1A song so mixing those two songs together will be easier than normal.

If I don’t try songs that I think personally sound good together, I am getting inspiration through other people. This can be along the lines of my friends giving me suggestions that I try, or other videos I see of DJ’s mixing music. When I like the result of the mix that I try out, I record it not only on my phone but on my laptop for higher quality audio. I plan on posting what I mix on my social media later this month due to this fresh start so if you’re interested, feel free to follow my socials on my blog!

Dropping the first track of my journey

Every journey has a beginning, and this is the start of mine. Starting this blog is my way of putting thoughts, stories, and experiences into words, and I’m excited to bring you along for the ride.

My name is Marcus Fredrickson, and I am a current graduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno, where I’m seeking to get a master’s in business administration with an emphasis in sports management. I also went to the University of Nevada, Reno, for my undergrad, where I obtained my marketing degree with a minor in supply chain management. I work in sales and marketing, but I am trying to shift into the management workforce since I believe that management in sports is really fun.

Despite trying to get into all of those fields that I listed in the previous paragraph, I have hobbies I also want to pursue while working in those fields. I love to DJ and make music in my free time, and in the age of social media, this is a great opportunity to try and explore that option. A great way to reach out to people is through popular channels like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, which are great ways of using short-form content to engage others.

I DJ any genre ranging from pop music all the way to EDM since I like to express my creativity through mixing music. I enjoy making house music and remixes to any sort of pop song that is trending because you can always add on to a song.

If you enjoy music or want to see a person pursue social media to see how far documenting a hobby can go, I encourage you to stay updated with this blog page and follow all of my social media. Looking forward to startingthis new journey together!
